High Performance Sailing Week 2018

This year sees the return of high performance

coaching to Loch Earn Sailing Club July 16th-20th.

Last year was the first time this week had run and was exceptional. Lasting for 5 days there was always going to be an opportunity for champagne conditions at some point. What a start as we were blessed with true Loch Earn Westerly’s for the majority of the week.

The week was coached by Duncan Hepplewhite (RYA Scotland coach of the year 2015). He lived up to his reputation with the work starting long before the week commenced. Each sailor was tasked with a questionnaire detailing their experience and most importantly their aims for the training.

Training specific to each sailor was provided, which was no small challenge given the wide variety of boats being put through their paces. For the vast majority the focus was on class specific boat handling but as the week progressed we moved onto applying these skills in race environments such as the start line and tight race courses.

Evenings were spent with a pursuit race at the end of most days once Duncan had left although occasionally time spent in the clubhouse on boat and sail maintenance was required. Duncan was also able to remain flexible enough with his timing to ensure we were able to achieve time on the water in the best conditions available so some evenings the coaching finished late.

The success was measured by the desire to repeat the week this year and to follow a similar format.

With Duncan’s involvement with the Waszp dinghy it would be a great opportunity for them to get involved. Although the focus remains on high performance boat handling we are also open to thinking out the box to make this a success for those who want to be involved.

Last year for example the club 420 was put to use for a few sessions, and in addition I have the RS500 and I would be most keen to ensure enthusiastic sailors were able to participate. If you are keen to be involved in any way please get in touch and we can see what we can make happen.
